Historically and since time immemorial, the Lower Kootenay Band, locally known as Yaqan Nukiy were the original inhabitants of the Lower Kootenay area. The name Yaqan Nukiy literally means “where the rock stands” and refers to an important place in the Creston Valley. Yaqan Nuʔkiy School (YNS) is an Independent/Band Operated School within Lower Kootenay First Nation. YNS serves students from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade Seven and welcomes students of all heritages. Currently, the school has a population of approximately 93 students. Our smaller class sizes allows for more interaction between teachers and students.
